Lesson, 1839

Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp, peatswamp and kerangas forest to lower montane forest, plantations. From sea-level - 1,300 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually in pairs or small groups. Often in mixed feeding flocks.

Food
Fruits and small invertebrates.

Voice
A quiet, trilling 'prrrr'. Song is a squeaky, rapid 'bee-quick-bee-bee-quick'.

Eggs (Guide)
White with fine greyish and reddish flecks.

Subspecies
Subspecies halizonus barely distinguishable, and may not be valid. Described subspecies axanthizus (Natuna Is) synonymized with that taxon. Proposed subspecies chloeoides (north-western Sumatra), perplexus (northern Borneo) and oblitus (Bangka, Belitung and western Borneo) all poorly differentiated, or described on basis of eye-colour morphs and are treated as junior synonyms of nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • simplex Lesson, 1839   -  Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia south, including Riau and Lingga Archipelagos, to Sumatra (including Bangka, Batu, Belitung, Nias I), and Borneo (including Balambangan I).
  • prillwitzi Hartert, 1902   -  Java.
  • halizonus Oberholser, 1917   -  Anambas Is and Natuna Is.
  • perplexus Chasen & Kloss, 1929   -  Northern and eastern Borneo; Balembangan I.
  • oblitus Deignan, 1954   -  Southern and western Borneo; Bangka, Belitung and South Natuna islands.


Similar Species
Red-eyed Bulbul (Pycnonotus brunneus) which is slightly larger, iris is orange not red, and underparts are darker.
