Habitat
Shallow tidal estuaries, mudflats and bays, occasionally visiting paddy-fields and fishponds.
Brunei Darussalam (NB), China (mainland) (B), Hong Kong (China) (P), Indonesia (NB), Japan (NB), Malaysia (NB), North Korea (B), Philippines (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), Singapore (NB), South Korea (B), Taiwan (China) (NB), Thailand (NB), Vietnam (NB).
Vagrant to USA.
Population
Estimated population is 2,600 - 3,400 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss and degradation through reclamation of tidal flats and estuarine habitats for infrastructure, industry, aquaculture and agriculture, pollution and disturbance of breeding birds are the main threats.

Voice
Guttural croaking, 'gwa' is occasionally uttered when taking flight.
Subspecies
Formerly thought to be a white morph of Pacific Reef-Egret (Egretta sacra).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
White morph of Pacific Reef-Egret (Egretta sacra) which has a shorter, less pointed bill and shorter legs, Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) shows more contrast between yellow feet and black legs and has less extensive pale area on lower mandible.
