Subspecies
Sometimes placed in Rallus, or referred to genus Ortygonax. In past sometimes regarded as conspecific with Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
caucae (Conover, 1949) - South-western Colombia (Cauca Valley south to Nariño).
nigricans (Vieillot, 1819) - Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, west, south-central and eastern Brazil, Paraguay and extreme north-eastern Argentina.
