Subspecies
Controversial discussion continues as to whether this species belongs in Phaethornithinae or Trochilinae. Based on external morphology, hindneck musculature, and behaviour it has even been placed, together with members of genus Doryfera, in a separate subfamily Doryferinae, phylogenetically ranked between the hermits and non-hermits. Behavioural and molecular studies suggest that the species is not related to the Phaethornithinae.
