Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Greater Yellownape (Chrysophlegma flavinucha), from which it is largely separated by altitude in small area of overlap. Birds of eastern and southern Borneo formerly separated as subspecies saba.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
humii Hargitt, 1889 - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and southern peninsular Thailand to Sumatra (including Bangka) and Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chequer-throated Yellownape (Chrysophlegma humii).
mentale Temminck, 1825 - Evergreen and moss forests of western Java.
Similar Species
Crimson-winged Woodpecker (Picus puniceus) which has a red moustachial stripe and lacks chestnut around the neck and breast.
