Subspecies west of Andes (litae and, possibly inseparable from it, suffusa) may represent a separate species, but further study is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
suffusa (Griscom, 1932) - Eastern Panama (San Blas, Darién) and adjacent north-western Colombia.
litae (Hellmayr, 1906) - West of Andes in western Colombia and western Ecuador (southern mainly to Pichincha). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Choco Manakin (Cryptopipo litae).
holochlora (Sclater, 1888) - Eastern slope of Andes and adjacent lowlands from Colombia (southern from Meta) south to central Peru.
viridior (Chapman, 1924) - Eastern slope of Andes in south-eastern Peru.
