Subspecies
Along with Yellow Longbill (Macrosphenus flavicans) and Grey Longbill (Macrosphenus concolor) have in the past been considered to be babblers (Timaliidae). Forms a superspecies with Yellow Longbill (Macrosphenus flavicans) and often treated as conspecific, but, although the two have similar songs, they occur together where ranges overlap marginally (western Cameroon).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
kempi (Sharpe, 1905) - Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana and south-western Nigeria.
flammeus Marchant, 1950 - South-eastern Nigeria (east of lower R Niger) and western Cameroon (Korup National Park).
