Subspecies
Has in the past been treated as conspecific with White-lored Gnatcatcher (Polioptila albiloris).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
restricta Brewster, 1889 - Lowlands of extreme southern USA (extreme south-eastern Arizona), and western Mexico from eastern Sonora south to northern Sinaloa, including nearshore islands of Pájaros and Masocari.
nigriceps Baird, 1864 - Lowlands of western Mexico from central Sinaloa south to Colima.
