Subspecies
Taxonomic status of subspecies gabun subject to some confusion. Recent observations of singing birds indicate that it may instead be a form of Pectoral-patch Cisticola (Cisticola brunnescens). Further study is required.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
gabun Lynes, 1931 - Western Gabon, eastern PRCongo and extreme western DRCongo.
imatong Cave, 1938 - Extreme southern Sudan and north-eastern Uganda.
entebbe Lynes, 1930 - North-eastern DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
itombwensis Prigogine, 1957 - Eastern DRCongo.
mauensis van Someren, 1922 - Highlands of Kenya and adjacent northern Tanzania.
ayresii Hartlaub, 1863 - Angola, southern DRCongo, extreme north-western and north-eastern Zambia, southern Tanzania, northern Malawi, Zimbabwe, eastern South Africa and Lesotho.
