Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Long-tailed Glossy Starling (Lamprotornis caudatus) and Meves's Long-tailed Starling (Lamprotornis mevesii).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • aeneocephalus Heuglin, 1863   -  Eastern and south-eastern Sudan, north-western Eritrea and western Ethiopia.
  • purpuroptera Rüppell, 1845   -  Southern Ethiopia, north-eastern DRCongo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, western and southern Kenya, south-eastern Somalia, and north-western and north-eastern Tanzania.
