The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
validirostris Koelz, 1951 - North-eastern Pakistan eastern in western Himalayas to Bhutan and all north-eastern Indian hill states, adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and north-western and western Myanmar.
ricketti Ogilvie-Grant, 1904 - North-eastern Myanmar, southern and south-eastern China (west-central Sichuan south to western and north-western Yunnan and east to northern Fujian, also Hainan), northern Thailand and northern Indochina.
aeralatus Blyth, 1855 - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
schauenseei Deignan, 1946 - Southern Thailand.
cameranoi Salvadori, 1879 - Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
