Subspecies
Has been treated in expanded genus Garrulax, but placement in present genus supported by recent molecular studies. Often treated as conspecific with Red-faced Liocichla (Liocichla phoenicea). Individuals of this species recorded in area from southern Yunnan (China) south to eastern part of north-western Thailand not yet assigned to subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ripponi (Oates, 1900) - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar, adjacent southern China (western and south-western Yunnan) and north-western Thailand.
wellsi (La Touche, 1921) - South-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan east to north-eastern Guangxi), northern Laos and extreme northern Vietnam (northern Tonkin).
