Colombia (entire western slope and very locally on eastern slope of western Andes, also western slope of central Andes in Antioquia) south to north-western Ecuador (Carchi, Imbabura and north-western Pichincha).

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and egradation through rapid and ongoing deforestation, due to intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing and mining, are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Has been considered to form a superspecies with Yellow-throated Tanager (Iridosornis analis), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Evidence for treatment as two separate species is weak, and sympatry not proven.
