Subspecies
Despite close approach geographically by Fulvous Shrike-tanager (Lanio fulvus), which replaces this species north of R Amazon, the two are differentiated genetically by a remarkably large amount (7/0%).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
versicolor (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - South of R Amazon in eastern Peru (south of R Marañón), western Brazil (east to R Tapajós) and northern Bolivia.
parvus von Berlepsch, 1912 - East-central Brazil south of Amazon (from R Tapajós east to lower R Tocantins, south to Mato Grosso) and extreme north-eastern Bolivia.
