Subspecies
Apalis pulchra and Apalis ruwenzorii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include ruwenzorii as a subspecies of pulchra. Both taxa are transferred into the genus Oreolais following Nguembock et al. (2008).

Forms a superspecies with Ruwenzori Apalis (Oreolais ruwenzorii) and sometimes treated as conspecific. They may be better placed together in a separate genus. Also, often considered closely related to Bar-throated Apalis (Apalis thoracica), but differs in having ten (not twelve) rectrices and is genetically quite distinct.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

pulcher (Sharpe, 1891) - South-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon highlands, north-eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, south-eastern Uganda and south-western Kenya.
murphyi (Chapin, 1932) - Marungu Mts, in south-eastern DRCongo.
