Subspecies
Geographical variation relatively weak. Subspecies dugandi considered doubtfully distinct. Birds from south-eastern Peru presumed to belong to nominate thoracicus, but further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
dugandi Meyer de Schauensee, 1950 - South-eastern Colombia and adjacent western Brazil on R Solimíµes.
erithacus Sclater, PL, 1890 - From eastern Ecuador south to eastern Peru (south to mouth of R Urubamba).
thoracicus (Sclater, 1865) - Western and central Amazonian Brazil (east to R Tapajós), and probably this subspecies in south-eastern Peru.
