Composed of mud, located on rocky outcrops or at entrances to caves.
Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
peruvianus (Latham, 1790) - Central Peru (southern San Martín south to Junín).
aequatorialis Taczanowski 1889 - Andes of western Venezuela (north-western Barinas, Táchira), central and eastern Andes of Colombia, and eastern slope in Ecuador and Peru (south to Amazonas and northern San Martín).
sanguinolentus Gould, 1859 - Western Andes of Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
saturatus Cabanis & Heine, 1860 - South-eastern Peru and western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
