Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus latirostris ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
penardi (Hellmayr, 1905) - Surinam and French Guiana.
fumifrons Hartlaub, 1853 - Lower Amazonian and north-eastern Brazil (central Pará east to southern Maranhío and north-eastern Mato Grosso, and coastal region from Paraíba south to northern Bahia).
