First Described (Guide)
(Temminck, 1825)

Habitat
Primary lowland dipterocarp to upper montane forest with open understorey. From sea-level - 1,700 m. Does not tolerate habitat disturbance.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (E), Thailand.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually solitary. Often in mixed feeding flocks. Forages in lower and middle understorey.

Food
Insects, berries.

Voice
A three or four note call, with a sad, pleading tone, 'ki kee kee kee'. Also a softer 'kuwee'. Soft, rapid drumming.

A cavity excavated in a dead stump.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 3.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Greater Yellownape (Chrysophlegma flavinucha), from which it is largely separated by altitude in small area of overlap. Birds of eastern and southern Borneo formerly separated as subspecies saba.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • humii Hargitt, 1889   -  Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and southern peninsular Thailand to Sumatra (including Bangka) and Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chequer-throated Yellownape (Chrysophlegma humii).
  • mentale Temminck, 1825   -  Evergreen and moss forests of western Java.


Similar Species
Crimson-winged Woodpecker (Picus puniceus) which has a red moustachial stripe and lacks chestnut around the neck and breast.
