Subspecies
Picoides stricklandi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Strickland's Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus stricklandi) and Arizona Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus arizonae) following AOU (2000).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
stricklandi (Malherbe, 1845) - Eastern Mexico, from eastern Michoacán east to western-central Veracruz and Puebla.
fraterculus (Ridgway, 1887) - Southern Sinaloa and adjacent Durango south to Michoacán.
arizonae (Hargitt, 1886) - South-western USA, western, northern Mexico.
