Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Deforestation and habitat degradation due to mining, intensive grazing, extensive burning for grazing, and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Montezuma Quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) and may be conspecific. Possible subspecies differens described from Honduras, but not usually considered valid.
