Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 4,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearing for the cultivation of staple and export crops, mining, logging, hunting, are the main threats.

Voice
In Bolivia song is a booming series of four phrases lasting c.9 seconds and repeated every 15 seconds, final phrase is a far carrying emphatic 'hmm'. In Peru song appears to be a single booming phrase of 3 to 4 notes repeated every 4 seconds. Alarm call is an explosive disyllabic 'k-sop'.
Subspecies
Both members of genus have been placed, together with those of Mitu, and less often Nothocrax, in Crax. Has been considered a subspecies of Helmeted Curassow (Pauxi pauxi), with which forms superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- unicornis Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1939 - Eastern slope of Andes in central Bolivia.
- koepckeae Weske and Terborgh, 1971 - Slopes of Cerros del Sira, eastern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sira Curassow (Pauxi koepckeae).
