Subspecies
Originally included with Broad-billed Fairy-wren (Chenorhamphus grayi) and Wallace's Fairy-wren (Sipodotus wallacii) in a separate genus, Todopsis. Later placement in present genus supported by protein evidence. Subspecies bonapartii intergrades with nominate in Geelvink Bay area. Birds from northern New Guinea (eastern from R Mamberamo) described as subspecies dohertyi, but considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

mysorensis (Meyer, AB, 1874) - Biak I, in Geelvink Bay.
bonapartii (Gray, GR, 1859) - Aru Is, and southern lowland New Guinea from Geelvink Bay east to east of Port Moresby.
