Subspecies
Specimens at the south end of the range of nominate are similar in colour to tinochlora, but the subspecific distinction is still evident in the general coloration and the pattern of the tail-feather tips.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
flavescens (Loddiges, 1832) - Andes of north-western Venezuela (Mérida) and Colombia (all three ranges).
tinochlora Oberholser, 1902 - South-western Colombia and western Andean slope of Ecuador.
