Nest
A shallow scrape on the ground, under a low bush, lined with grass.
Eggs (Guide )
6 - 10; buffish rather sparsely spotted reddish-brown. Incubation: about 27 days; by female.
Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Caucasian Grouse (Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi ).
Commonly hybridizes with Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus ), and quite often with Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus ). Also occasionally with Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta ) and Hazel Grouse (Bonasa bonasia ).
Subspecies tschusii often included in viridanus , and baikalensis in ussuriensis .
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
britannicus Witherby & Lönnberg, 1913 - Northern and western Great Britain.
tetrix (Linnaeus, 1758) - Most of range, from Scandinavia, Belgium and Alps of southern France to north-eastern Siberia (R Kolyma).
viridanus (Lorenz, T, 1891) - South-eastern Russia and south-western Siberia, between R Don and R Irtysh.
tschusii Johansen, 1898 - Southern Siberia, from R Irtysh to L Baikal, north to Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk, south to north-western Altai and Sajan Mts.
baikalensis (Lorenz, T, 1911) - South-eastern Siberia, from L Baikal to Amurland, south to northern Mongolia and north-western Manchuria.
mongolicus (Lönnberg, 1904) - Kirgizh and Tien Shan east to Altai and other ranges in western Mongolia.
ussuriensis (Kohts, 1911) - Manchuria, from Khingan (Chingan) Mts to R Ussuri and north-eastern Korea.
