Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest. From 800 - 1,600 m, occasionally 600 - 2,200 m.

Brazil.

Coastal south-eastern Brazil from south-eastern Minas Gerais, Esp��rito Santo and Rio de Janeiro south through eastern S�o Paulo, eastern Paran� and eastern Santa Catarina.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Based on molecular-genetic studies this species forms a monophyletic clade with Seven-colored Tanager (Tangara fastuosa), Green-headed Tanager (Tangara seledon), Red-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanocephala) and Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris). Described form Tangara gouldi appears to be a hybrid between present species and Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris).
