Subspecies
Proposed subspecies exultans, described from southern China (Salween Divide, in western Yunnan), considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ignicauda (Hodgson, 1837) - Northern and north-eastern India (from Rajaji National Park and Garhwal eastern in Himalayas to Arunachal Pradesh, also Meghalaya east to Nagaland and south to Manipur and Chittagongs), Nepal, Bhutan, north-eastern Bangladesh (Sylhet), southern China (southern Xizang, and western Sichuan south to central Yunnan) and northern Myanmar.
flavescens Baker, ECS, 1921 - North-eastern India (Lushai Hills, in eastern Mizoram) and adjacent western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
