Subspecies
Has sometimes been placed in genus Leioptila. Subspecies cana considered doubtfully valid.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
picaoides (Hodgson, 1839) - Central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh), north-eastern Bangladesh, northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
cana (Riley, 1929) - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim), north-western and western Thailand, Laos, Vietnam (Tonkin and central Annam) and south-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan east to western Guangxi).
wrayi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1910) - Peninsular Malaysia.
