Subspecies
Proposed subspecies abuensis (from western India) considered inseparable from albogularis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- hyperythra (Franklin, 1831) - Northern, central and eastern India and southern Nepal.
- albogularis (Blyth, 1847) - Western and southern India.
- phillipsi Whistler, 1941 - Sri Lanka.
