Subspecies
Individuals of this species recorded in central Yunnan, in China, have not yet been assigned to subspecies.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

superciliaris (Blyth, 1842) - Central and eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (central Arunachal Pradesh).
intextus (Ripley, 1948) - North-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Nagaland, adjacent southern Assam, Manipur and Mizoram) and western and north-western Myanmar.
forresti (Rothschild, 1926) - North-eastern Myanmar and southern China (north-western Yunnan).
rothschildi (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) - Northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
