Subspecies
Geographical variation mainly clinal. Proposed subspecies melanotis (eastern Himalayas east to northern Myanmar) considered part of cline, and merged with nominate. Form named as pingi (central Yunnan, in southern China) represents presumed hybrid between nominate and robini. Individuals of this species observed in south-western Guangxi (southern China) have not been assigned to subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • pectoralis (Gould, 1836)   -  Central Nepal east to Bhutan, all north-eastern Indian states, eastern Bangladesh, north, central and western Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • subfusus (Kinnear, 1924)   -  South-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
  • robini (Delacour, 1927)   -  Extreme eastern Myanmar, southern China (southern Yunnan), northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam).
  • picticollis (Swinhoe, 1872)   -  EC, eastern and south-eastern China (eastern Gansu and southern Shaanxi east to eastern Hubei, southern Jiangsu and north-eastern Zhejiang, south to eastern Guizhou, north-eastern Guangxi and Guangdong).
  • semitorquatus (Ogilvie-Grant, 1900)   -  Hainan (southern China).
  • melanotis Blyth, 1843   -  Himalayas (Sikkim to Assam, northern Myanmar and southern China).
  • pingi Cheng, Tso-hsin, 1963   -  Southern China (western Yunnan south of range of melanotis).
