Habitat
Tall lowland wet grassland, reed-swamp and other emergent vegetation in or bordering freshwater swamps or along banks of rivers in lowlands.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh (B) (NB), China (mainland) (B) (NB), Hong Kong (China) (B) (NB), India (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Nepal (B) (NB), Thailand (E) (B), Vietnam (E) (B).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Drainage, burning, over-grazing and conversion of habitat for agriculture are the most pertinent threats.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • bengalensis Jerdon, 1863   -  Northern and north-eastern India (Uttar Pradesh east to Assam and Manipur) and adjacent southern Nepal and north-eastern Bangladesh.
  • striatus Styan, 1892   -  South-eastern Myanmar (Tenasserim), north-eastern Vietnam (eastern Tonkin) and southern China (Hainan). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chinese Grass-babbler (Graminicola striatus).
  • sinicus Stresemann, 1923   -  South-eastern China (Guangxi, northern Guangdong). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chinese Grass-babbler (Graminicola striatus).
