Subspecies
Most closely related to Grey-breasted Prinia (Prinia hodgsonii), which shares its habit of sewing nest into leaves, but the two are vocally and morphologically quite distinct. True differences between subspecies confused by seasonal variation. Taxonomic revision is required.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
rufescens Blyth, 1847 - Eastern and north-eastern India (from Sikkim and adjacent north-western Bengal east to Arunachal Pradesh, and from Meghalaya east to Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Also Simlipal Hills, in north-eastern Orissa), Bhutan, central and eastern Bangladesh, southern China (south-eastern Xizang, western and southern Yunnan) and north, western and central Myanmar.
beavani Walden, 1867 - South-eastern Myanmar and Thailand (except south-eastern and peninsula) east to northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
