Subspecies
Birds in Bangladesh apparently belong to subspecies cacharensis, but further study is needed.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • cacharensis (Deignan, 1948)   -  North-eastern India (southern Assam hills, extreme western Manipur, and Meghalaya) and south-eastern Bangladesh (Chittagong). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cachar Bulbul (Iole cacharensis).
  • myitkyinensis (Deignan, 1948)   -  Western and eastern Myanmar. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Grey-eyed Bulbul (Iole propinqua).
  • viridescens Blyth, 1845   -  South-western and southern Myanmar (including Arakan) and south-western Thailand.
  • lekhakuni (Deignan, 1954)   -  Southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim) and western Thailand (including Kanchanaburi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Grey-eyed Bulbul (Iole propinqua).
  • cinnamomeoventris Baker, ECS, 1917   -  Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim), peninsular Thailand and extreme northern Peninsular Malaysia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Grey-eyed Bulbul (Iole propinqua).
