Subspecies
Putative subspecies described from Assam, in north-eastern India, viridulus (Lushai Hills) and aureolus (Naga Hills), are considered indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

flaveolus (Gould, 1836) - Himalayan foothills from central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, and southern Assam hills including Meghalaya, and Lushai Hills), south-eastern Tibet (in territory claimed by India), north-eastern and south-eastern Bangladesh (Sylhet, Chittagong) and north-western and north-eastern Myanmar (Chindwin, Arakan).
burmanicus (Oates, 1889) - Southern China (western Yunnan), south-eastern Myanmar (Karen Hills, southern Shan States, Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
