Habitat
Dense thickets and scrub in valley bottoms and along stream-sides, within montane forest. From 2,800 - 3,700 m.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland) (B), India (NB).

Vagrant to Bangladesh (NB), Myanmar.

Southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to south-western Gansu, western Sichuan and northern Yunnan). Non-breeding north-eastern India.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Deforestation from logging and agricultural expansion on both the breeding and wintering grounds is the main threat.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Erithacus. In the past Blackthroat (Calliope obscura) was sometimes treated as a colour morph of this species.
