Subspecies
Was for long erroneously included within partly sympatric Short-billed Minivet (Pericrocotus brevirostris). Putative subspecies cryptus (described from Doi Pha Hom Pok, in northern Thailand) considered indistinguishable from ripponi.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
favillaceus Bangs & Phillips, JC, 1914 - Breeds north-eastern Afghanistan (Nuristan) and north-western Himalayas (east to western Nepal). Non-breeding south to southern Pakistan and western India.
laetus Mayr, 1940 - Eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (northern and western Assam) and southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
ethologus Bangs & Phillips, 1914 - Breeds north-eastern India (eastern Assam), northern Myanmar and central China (Hebei and southern Shanxi south to south-western Gansu, south-eastern Qinghai, Yunnan and Guizhou). Non-breeding northern Thailand, northern Laos, northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
mariae Ripley, 1952 - North-eastern India (south-eastern Assam) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
yvettae Bangs, 1921 - North-eastern Myanmar and southern China (western and south-western Yunnan).
