Eastern Brazil (Alagoas and southern Minas Gerais south to southern Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building is the main threat.

Subspecies
Almost certainly most closely related to Bearded Bellbird (Procnias averano), with which it shares several morphological characters in male (bare thigh patch, modification of outer primaries).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Male unmistakable in range. Female is larger than the Sharpbill (Oxyruncus cristatus) which has a conical bill and a characteristic scaly effect on face. Female Bearded Bellbird (Procnias averano) is very similar with a less dusky crown.
