Subspecies
Subspecies wolfei, based on single specimen, doubtfully distinct from nominate. Birds from Burma and Thailand may belong to subspecies syama, as opposed to rather similar nominate leuphotes and these birds sometimes awarded separate subspecies, burmana.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
wolfei (Dumont, 1820) - Sichuan (central China).
syama (Hodgson, 1837) - North-eastern India and eastern Nepal east to southern China (Guangdong, Hainan). Winters south through Indochina and Malay Peninsula to Sumatra.
leuphotes (Dumont, 1820) - South-western India, southern Burma and western Thailand; may also breed in parts of Indochina.
andamanica Abdulali & Grubh, 1970 - South Andaman I (Andaman Is).
