Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland and forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.
Bangladesh, Cambodia, India (B) (NB), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (P), Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.
Vagrant to Afghanistan.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
In past, sometimes considered conspecific with Madagascar Nightjar (Caprimulgus madagascariensis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- asiaticus Latham, 1790 - South-eastern Pakistan and India to southern Thailand and southern Indochina.
- eidos Peters, JL, 1940 - Sri Lanka.
- siamensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1934 - Northern Thailand.
