Perches still and very upright in the lower and middle canapoy, sallying out for food.
Voice
A series of short, hollow downslurred 'tyaup' notes repeated 5 or more times. A more melocholy 'pluu-du' and grating or croaking alarm 'tewirrr'.

Subspecies
Birds from north-eastern India to northern Myanmar sometimes separated as subspecies hodgsoni, but differences from nominate subspecies and helenae not constant.
The following 11 subspecies are recognised:
erythrocephalus (Gould, 1834) - Himalayas from Nepal through north-eastern India to Myanmar and western Thailand.
helenae Mayr, 1941 - Northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
yamakanensis Rickett, 1899 - South-eastern China (south-eastern Sichuan east to Fujian).
