Subspecies
No close relatives, and the only lowland member of genus. A specimen from upper R Napo (Ecuador) represents a hybrid between nominate subspecies of present species and subspecies orientalis of Red-headed Barbet (Eubucco bourcierii). Northern subspecies with blue nape sometimes combined as "richardsoni group", with yellow-naped southern subspecies referred to as "aurantiicollis group". Form from southern Colombia and northern Peru described as granadensis considered synonymous with nominate, but possibly a valid subspecies. Birds from central Peru named as subspecies coccineus now considered inseparable from aurantiicollis.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
richardsoni (Gray, 1846) - South-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta), eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (west of Iquitos).
nigriceps Chapman, 1928 - North-eastern Peru from lower R Putumayo and lower R Napo, east to extreme north-western Brazil (western Amazonas north of Amazon).
aurantiicollis Sclater, PL, 1858 - Eastern Peru from R Marañón, east to western Brazil south of Amazon (eastern almost to R Juruá) and south to north-western Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Flame-throated Barbet (Eubucco aurantiicollis).
purusianus Gyldenstolpe, 1951 - Western Brazil south of Amazon, from R Juruá east to upper R Madeira.
