Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Common Flameback (Dinopium javanense). Subspecies weakly differentiated.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

shorii (Vigors, 1832) - Northern India (Haryana) east through lowlands and southern foothills of Himalayas to Nagaland and northern Bangladesh; possibly still in peninsular hills (Eastern Ghats).
anguste Ripley, 1950 - Western Myanmar.
