Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Stripe-breasted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos atratus). Eastern subspecies analis, longipennis and andamanensis have sometimes been treated as forming a separate species. Birds from western Javan hills described as subspecies montis, but inseparable from analis.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
westermani (Blyth, 1870) - Northern Pakistan (Margalla Hills), north-western India (Himachal Pradesh) and western Nepal.
macei (Vieillot, 1818) - Central Nepal east to northern Myanmar, and southern in eastern peninsular India to Orissa and north-eastern Andhra Pradesh.
andamanensis (Blyth, 1859) - Andaman Is.
longipennis Hesse, 1912 - Southern Myanmar, north-west, western and central Thailand, and central Laos and Annam south to Cambodia and Cochinchina.
analis (Bonaparte, 1850) - Java and Bali; probably also southern Sumatra.
