Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 1,050 m.
Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique, Montserrat, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Vagrant to Virgin Islands (U.S.).
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
brachyura (Jardine, 1846) - Panama east to the Guianas and Trinidad, south to west-central Brazil and northern Bolivia.
praevelox Bangs & Penard, TE, 1918 - Grenada, St Vincent and Tobago.
ocypetes Zimmer, JT, 1953 - South-western Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru.
cinereocauda (Cassin, 1850) - North-central Brazil.
