Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Melaenornis, but latter and Fraseria probably closer to each other than either is to present genus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
lawsoni Clancey, 1966 - Southern and south-eastern Botswana and northern South Africa (Northern Cape east to North West Province and extreme western Free State).
silens (Shaw, 1809) - South Africa from south-western western Cape and Karoo east to Free State, northern Province and interior KwaZulu-Natal, also western Swaziland and Lesotho lowlands. Non-breeding also on coastal plain from southern Mozambique south to KwaZulu-Natal.
