Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Leucotreron and a later proposal returned all members of that group to Ptilinopus, but placed present species in subgenus Rhamphiculus along with other Philippine and Sulawesi forms Flame-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus marchei), Cream-bellied Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus merrilli), Red-eared Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus fischeri), Maroon-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus epius) and Black-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri). Present species is most closely allied to Red-eared Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus fischeri). Racial variation slight and probably clinal or not geographically correlated.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

occipitalis (Gray, 1844) - Northern and eastern Philippines from Luzon south to Visayas.
incognitus Tweeddale, 1877 - Mountains of Mindanao, south-eastern Philippines.
