Habitat
Subalpine and alpine meadows, slopes with Rhododendron and juniper Juniperus. Edge of birch forest in spring and winter. From 1,800 - 3,300 m.

Range (Guide)

Armenia (B) (NB), Azerbaijan (B) (NB), Georgia (B) (NB), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B) (NB), Russia (European) (B) (NB), Turkey (B) (NB).

Great and Little Caucasus Mts, southern into north-eastern Turkey and north-western Iran.

Population
Estimated population is 59,000 - 110,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and fragmentation through clearing due to road building, home contruction, and hunting and grazing are the main threats.
