Estimated population is 10,000 - 50,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Population of Turkey and Armenia has been separated in different subspecies, tauricus, but doubtfully distict.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

caspius (Gmelin, 1784) - Southern and eastern Turkey through Armenia and north-western Iran to southern Transcaspia.
semenowtianschanskii Zarudny, 1908 - Zagros Mts, Iran.
tauricus Dresser, 1876 - Southern and eastern Turkey, western Armenia.
