Subspecies
Distinctive southern subspecies ottonis was once considered a separate species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
purus Todd, 1952 - Coastal and interior mountains of northern Venezuela (Yaracuy, and from Carabobo east to Distrito Federal and Aragua).
ophthalmicus (Taczanowski, 1874) - Andes of Colombia (western and central ranges), north-western and eastern Ecuador and eastern slope in Peru (south to Ayacucho).
ottonis von Berlepsch, 1901 - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Madre de Dios) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz).
